palm springs

ok, so this year was the year of canceled trips. we had a trip planned to ocho rios in july…well that was nixed. the baby’s due date was the exact day of the plane tickets we had! ha! we had our annual trip to vegas planned for august with matt and johann…that was a no go. obvs, i wouldn’t want to travel to vegas and leave a 2-3 week old baby! aaaaand our 5 year anniversary trip to new york was nixed because the baby would still be a freshie at only 5-6 weeks old!

i told hc a few months ago that i wanted to get away…go somewhere warm, just us, and relax. it would be the only trip we could squeeze in before the babes. we have way too much to do before she comes! we have remodeling, decorating, a wedding, showers, etc. leading up to this babe being born.

so, i was looking forward to this trip so much! sunshine, getting a tan, and just hanging out with my hubby. we were set with my parents watching miss olive. i packed her cute little suitcase the day before we left and i was getting sad. i was going to miss this little bugger! oh she lights up my life! i was excited to leave but it’s so different now, leaving her. i have left her before…when she was younger, but now that she is older, it really tugs at my heart strings. she’s a little person with a big personality and the fact that she loves me back so much, it melts my heart.

ok, well on to our trip. we had an early flight and for some reason, o’hare was sooooooo incredibly slooooooooooow. our baggage check, our security check, our everything. it took forever to get to our gate. the starbucks line {with one person in front of me} was soooooo slow. it took seven minutes to get a coffee. what?!! plus, buying magazines even took forever! it was like everyone was on slo-mo.

anyhoo, we landed in palm springs and the freakin’ airport is pretty much outside!!! you walk out the terminal and into beautiful, sunny weather outside! how amaze is that?! we got our rental within minutes and headed to the hotel which was 6-7 minutes away. oh, it was glorious. our room wasn’t ready so we dropped off our bags and had a drink outside under a cabana by the pool.

after our drinks, we walked to downtown palm springs, which was only a few blocks away.  it was warm, sunny, and perfect. we decided to nab lunch at sherman’s. a recommendation from many people. it was great! we sat on the patio and enjoy down home grub and tasty lemonade. it was fabulous!

we walked back and checked into our hotel. i loved our little room. it was so cute! the decor was so deco modern fun and we were right next to the pool! perfect view! i loved the avalon. it’s so quaint, cute, pretty, and green! it’s such a fun, lovely hotel. a very boutique hotel.

[loving our room]

we had a really chill night the first night. we were a bit tired…gosh, are we old. ugh. we ordered room service and just relaxed. hc and i talked about our plans for the next few days. we were totally ok with being chill, lazy, relaxed, uneventful…whatever you want to call it. it was our get away and we didn’t want any pressure to have to do something. our main was concern was to do much of nothing. so with that agreement, our first night there was fabulous! ha!

we hit the pool the next morning. the one thing about coming from central time to pacific, is that we would wake up so early {i can’t sleep in anymore, now that i have a kid…whaaaaa}! so we just rolled with it. it was really nice to start our day so early! we were ready and at the pool by 8:10! oh my!

after two plus hours in the pool, we headed over to the hotel’s restaurant, chi chi to have breakfast. they have a lovely outdoor seating area by their other pool. it was so comfortable and serene and really beautiful at night with the hanging lanterns! our breakfast was soooooooo good! so fresh, savory, and delicious. after we ate, we headed to another pool within the hotel to chill. it was a great morning/afternoon indeed! we headed back to the hotel and pretty much napped. ahhhhhh. living the life of ‘no kid’. hahaha! we headed out to dinner later and then back to our hotel to wind down {although we went out a little bit later for an ice cream run!}.

the next day we decided to drive up a mountain. hc really wanted to do it and i was game. until we started going through winding roads up so high with no guard rail! eep! i am afraid of heights and that was so scary for me!!!! oh, never again. i am glad we did it but i don’t think i would ever want to do that again! it was beautiful, scenic, and overall fun but i was anxious and got motion sickness. oh so not fun! we hit a high of 6500 feet! crazy! we pulled over so many times to let cars pass because we were going at a slower speed. i am sure so many people are used to driving these roads but they were driving so fast! there were some moments i felt like i was in a nightmare, driving off a cliff! yeah, did i mention i am afraid of heights?!

after our mountain escapades, we headed back to the hotel and got ready for the pool. we had the best time! we met so many cool couples while hanging out. everyone was so chill and fun to talk to. we spent a good chunk of our afternoon at the pool but unfortunately, the sun and the heat was getting to me, plus i couldn’t shake the motion sickness that i had from that morning’s trip. hc and i retired mid-late afternoon to our room. we relaxed and got ready to go out to dinner.

we made reservations at a place called melvyn’s. another restaurant recommended by many others. it was swanky, old, and fun. we loved everything about it. it was dated, had history, and everyone who worked there took their jobs so seriously! we had a great time, enjoyed our dinner, and hc was excited to be sitting in sinatra’s corner! haha! i think that was the most exciting part of the evening for him! he kept saying, “do you really think sinatra sat in this corner?!”

overall we had an amazing time in palm springs. we really enjoyed our time together. it was great to have actual conversations with hc! i know, that sounds crazy but we loved all our alone time. it was so nice to just spend time together and be on our schedule. we loved palm springs and we definitely want to go back!

how far along? 32 weeks!

weight gain: well, unofficially – none, but my actual appointment is this week. i am now at bi-weekly appointments and then will go into weekly ones, so i will get the official weight gain digits soon! so, at my 30 week check up, i was shocked i had not gained any weight. whaaaaaa?! i couldn’t believe it. i feel like i am always on track to gain something. this is now the second time during this pregnancy where i haven’t gained any weight! i keep hoping i will level out with the same weight i gained with olive but i don’t think that will happen! eep!

maternity clothes? full on maternity wear. i really can’t put on anything else. this belly is too big. my oh my, though, it’s so much more comfortable. i feel like the maternity shirts i purchased are almost getting too small or short?! haha! oh this belly!

sleep: the usual. i am going to bed way too late and not getting enough sleep. i am just preparing myself for this new baby! right?! i think the worst part about all this, is when i try to sleep in on the days that i can, i am so used to waking up early every day that i can’t! arghhhh…it’s the worst. i just pop awake in misery. c’est la vie.

physical state: i am admitting defeat. it feels like i have a twenty pound sack of sand sitting on my belly. yes, i am carrying around a big sack of sand and it’s totally weighing me down, slowing me down, and making me really tired. my legs are exhausted and i am getting uncomfortable just trying to sit or lie down. i have succumbed to compression socks and orthopedic shoes to relieve the stress i feel on my body. yikes!

miss anything? i miss my energy. i miss having a glass of wine. i miss sleeping more than six hours. i miss eating a hearty deli sandwich, cold. i miss that i can walk for miles and miles and not get tired. i really can’t wait to be back to my energizer bunny self.

baby movement: she’s a mover and shaker! it feels like she’s spinning all around my belly. i love watching and feeling her move inside but wow, she’s quite strong. i can’t imagine what it will feel like when she gets bigger. i already feel like she’s going to jump right out! she’s constantly like, hello? i am kind of getting cramped in here! unfortunately, she is still breeched but the doc’s say to not worry until we hit 36 weeks…so i am hoping we get some good news by then!

food cravings: i am not craving much of anything. i am eating my usual meals and snacks. i have become pretty routine with my breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. if you take a peek at my last bump update, my meals have pretty much remained the same.

bump status: i say ginormous but everyone says basketball. haha! this belly feels huge! it’s wiggly, it moves, and i lovingly look at it as it grows, for my darling baby girl is growing inside. i am curious on who she is, what she will be like, what will she look like, and what’s she doing in there when she moves around like she’s beating a drum inside of me. we seriously cannot wait to meet you little one!

gender reveal: as y’all know, it’s a sweet baby girl!

r’s first communion

so proud and excited for my little nephew to receive his first communion!

our plan was to get to the church early and we actually succeeded! i am amazed that we did! the parking lot was already packed but we found parking just fine. we headed inside and we immediately ran into terry. he directed us where to go and we found kim, reagan, and bennett sitting in a pew.

we waited around for everyone else to show and for the mass to begin. the ceremony was a lot quicker than i thought with sixty kids being welcomed! olive was being super cute in her daddy’s arms. she was being so sweet, so calm, and so good.

it was then time for reagan to receive his first communion. i was so excited and proud! i couldn’t wait! our entire pew walked up and i was definitely the crazy aunt with the camera, snapping pics non-stop! i did get a few good ones…although i should have played around with my setting because all the pics were sooooo red/orange in color – so annoying!

after church, we all hung out for a bit but i couldn’t hang for long…i was way too hungry and tired! i felt bad i didn’t stick around for more pics but when i don’t eat…i get exhausted and sick! so, we swung by starbucks to grab drinks and snacks before we hit the restaurant.

loved the place my sister and brother chose for the lunch. it’s a place called neat kitchen and it was super cute and they had super yummy eats! we had our own private room and it was great to let the kids run around and we just relaxed in a comfortable environment. we enjoyed tasty libations and mingled with all the other guests. olive was having a  blast with her cousins and avery. when this babe feels comfortable, she is just a gem.

the food was finally served and it was soooo good! we had a great time trying all the dishes and all the flavors that was presented before us. olive ate like a champ! it goes to show how delicious it was when this babe eats and eats and eats! woo hoo!

it was time for dessert and the pretty cake was adorned with my handmade cake topper for reagan! i must admit, i loved how it turned out! i was at the craft store with miss olive, with no plans and little ideas in mind as i pursued the aisles of trinkets. i looked at different cake topper ideas on the internet and i just wasn’t sure what i wanted to do! plus, try having a toddler with ya when you are trying to figure it out! every two seconds, “what’s this? what’s this? what’s this?” hahaha! oh my! i finally grabbed the supplies i needed in hopes that this cake topper would miraculously look fabulous and that i had grabbed all the materials i would need! well, it turned out perfect for my perfect little nephew!

after cake was served, we hung out just for a bit more and then said our goodbyes. it was a really awesome morning and afternoon with friends and family. i enjoyed my time at church, at the restaurant, and most of all…celebrating my nephews journey to christ’s table. it was a great day indeed!

dana’s bridal shower

i was so looking forward to this day! i couldn’t wait to celebrate with dana!

i love this gal. i know i tend to say this about a lot of my friends…but hey, shouldn’t friends be this awesome?!! she is so stinkin’ sweet, kind, loving, fashionable, and soooooo flippin’ funny!! i love her quirky nature, her love for sharks and rainbows. her lighthearted take on life. she’s a gem.

well, this babe is getting married this july. i am crossing my fingers this little lady in my belly stays put until after dana and scott’s wedding! do you hear that little baby girl? i must go to their wedding!!! you can come on out anytime after that!

as soon as i received dana’s shower invite, i perused her registry and snatched up a few pretties for this bride to be. her shower was in lincoln park at mon ami gabi and i have never ever been there! maybe it is because i have eaten at the one in the ‘burbs and have tried it, so i never had the need to eat there in the city but for some reason, i always thought it was closer to armitage near cafe babareeba but nope. it’s near lincoln park zoo!

i arrived a bit late, naturally, but the party had just started! i was super psyched that dana was sitting at our table. i was able to catch up with her and her other friends. can i just say she was wearing the most beautiful skirt! i was in love! it was so pretty, romantic, and beautiful. i love dana and her fashion choices…she’s always so vibrant and eclectic!

we ate, chit chatted, and had a lot of laughs! after lunch was served, the men came bouncing in. dana’s dad, scott, uncle, etc. came to join the party! they played a fun game and then the gift unwrapping began and the fun ensued! i was quite surprised how fast they went through everything because, let me tell ya, there was huge mound of gifts! more like a mountain of gifts!

after all the gifts were opened, everyone started to say their goodbyes. it was such a fun afternoon! i had a swell time seeing everyone in dana’s life and i had the best time seeing dana! i seriously can’t wait to celebrate their marriage this summer…right baby girl?!! haha!

mommy and me hairdo’s!

to celebrate mother’s day week, olive and i went to the salon and got matching hairstyles! we were so excited to get coordinating looks and this would be olive’s first time ever at a salon! yes, i have never had her hair cut and honestly, i am not sure when i will have that happen…

we went to the hair cuttery right down the street from us. it was only a few minutes away. if you need to find one closest to you, you can find a location here. they have locations throughout the midwest and east coast. what i love about this place is that it’s clean, close by, and it offers great prices for quick, stylish looks! if you are looking for a full service salon, they offer that too! as i waited to get our hair done, i noticed that they offer cuts, color, waxing, and texturing services. i also noticed a wide range of styling products on their shelf. they sell so many great salon brands! we were only there to get a cute style but i love that you don’t even have to make an appointment! our wait was minimal and when we walked in, there were several people ahead of us but it was quick to see a stylist!

i was a bit nervous over olive letting a stylist near her! she’s sooooo shy! i wanted to get my hair done first so she could see that it was ok. our stylist was so sweet and nice, actually everyone at the salon was! once my hair was done, we attempted to style olive’s hair. oooohhhhhhh, she was not having it.at.all. she screamed and cried. i coaxed her and reassured her it was ok. well, hc came to the rescue!!! he found a lollipop at the front desk and handed it to olive. yup, that did it! she stopped crying and let the stylist braid her hair with no complaints. woo hoo!

i loooooved how our hair turned out! we both had cute braided hair and it was so fun to get matching mommy and me hairdo’s! we had the best time spending it together and loved that we did something special in lieu of mother’s day. a definite special treat and bonding moment to be cherished!

of course we are posting some fun pics on our instagram account as well! if you aren’t following us yet, please do so! our ig handle is @tandeminlove! also, if you happen to head to your local hair cuttery for a fun mommy and me style {for mother’s day or any day you want to make special with your daughter{s}, make sure you hashtag your pics with #MyHCLook for a chance to be featured on hair cuttery’s blog gallery!

the power of love

we were so looking forward to this day ~ april 23, 2016. read on to find out why.

{the day i found out our friend ande had cancer, it was like a punch in the stomach.}

i met ande years ago. i think it was around 10+ years since we first encountered one another? she was a store manager at a retail shop inside the watertower building on michigan avenue. i loved her store. i constantly shopped there. we eventually became close friends and started hanging out. we would go to each other’s parties, events, have brunches, and dinners together. whenever any one of us had a special occasion to celebrate, we would always be there for each other!

we developed a fun relationship over the years. the kind where you meet up every few months to say hello and catch up. ande eventually switched to another store in lincoln park and that became our new stomping ground. especially on a warm summer day…i loved visiting her at her store and usually, we would head out for a quick lunch date to catch up.

when i found out ande had cancer, i contacted her immediately. i wanted to let her know i was there for her if she needed anything and i was curious on many levels. throughout this ordeal…ande was the strongest person. i was amazed by her positive attitude, strength, love, and courage.

when a person is told they have cancer…their attitude can go two ways. one way can be self pity, negativity, and helplessness or it can go towards a powerful, positive, winning outlook. ande’s attitude took on the latter description. she amazed me. she inspired me. how can a person who is battling such an awful situation be so encouraging to others??!!! ande claims it was because everyone around her was so loving, supportive, and uplifted her in the most soulful ways that there was no way her spirit could go south. even during her most tough moments, there was always someone around who would lift her up and that was how she carried on and didn’t let cancer win!

fast forward many months, through many chemo treatments, and many trying days – ande received news that she beat cancer! oh my goodness!!! i was so beyond elated!

ande had told me in december {when we met up for a holiday dinner} that i needed to save the date. she said for me to mark on my calendar that april 23 would be her cancer free party. no if’s and’s or but’s about it. so i did. i saved the date for her celebration and on this day…celebrate we did!!

you are an amazing person ande. words can’t describe what an incredible human being you are! i am so fortunate to know you and to call you my friend. thank you for being you. we love you to bits! we believe in the power of love!

how far along? 28 weeks!

weight gain: six pounds. bleh. really? still on trend to out gain the weight i gained with olive. at 20 weeks, i was on track to level out but that went out the door. interestingly, hc has been on a diet for the past four months, eating healthier meals, and i have increasingly outpaced his weight loss to my weight gain. ugh. i.can’t.stop.eating. mmmmmmm.

maternity clothes? not only did i break out the maternity clothes last month, i caved in and actually bought a bunch of items the other day. i was so frustrated with my wardrobe. nothing fit. i don’t know what i did when i was pregnant with olive?! i didn’t buy anything! i had dressy pants, maternity hosiery, and i think that was about it. wtf? what did  i wear last time?!!! everything looks like a crop freakin’ top on me right now! anyhoo, i bought a bunch of tanks, tees, dresses, and pants to wear. yay!

sleep: i am trying. not trying too hard. but trying to get myself to bed earlier. olive digressed a few days in sleep a few weeks ago, but besides that, i try and try to get to bed earlier but don’t really succeed. so, sleep has been okaaaayyyyyyy. some nights are better than others. i am always kickin’ myself in that department.

physical state: i am tired. my legs are so tired. i have to wear compression socks and tights. whaaaaaa? yes, like an old lady. i am out of breath. i am tired when i am walking. i can’t believe how exhausted i am?? i did not feel this way with olive, at allllll. not until i hit 36-37 weeks. so, my mind is blown away that i still have ’12’ weeks to go {i put that in quotations because who knows when this babe with make her appearance}. i could cry. i really feel like i could wheel chair myself around everywhere because i am so beat down already. yikes!

miss anything? i miss my energy. i miss wine. warm weather makes me want to have a beer or a glass wine while eating dinner alfresco. i miss my pre-pregnancy skin. i have acne, dry patches, and crazy blotches all over my face. i miss fresh salmon and reaching my toes without being uncomfortable. oy vey!

baby movement: she’s nutty!!! olive was very calm in the belly. well, she did kick like crazy but she was very stationary and was never breeched. she always stayed in the same position. this babe is all over the place. like seriously! she’s always spinning around. kicking, punching, stretching – upside down, right side up, and twirling round and round. she’s constantly breeched and moving everywhere in the womb. this must be a sign of how crazy this second babe will be. gah!

food cravings: no real food cravings. things are about the same. according to the weight gain, i could probably eat a bit less but i do my usual – yogurt in the morning, snack mid morning {a chocolate croissant is healthy, right?}, lunch, dinner, and a late night snack. i go though phases where i really love dessert or i don’t want anything sweet at all. i can definitely say carbs are my best friends.

bump status: so stinkin’ big. so many people say i am small {they’re so sweet} but i know the truth. this big belly don’t lie! i look and feel sooooooo B I G! it’s heavy and i am already having a difficult time getting up and down, whether it be sitting in a chair, laying in bed, or sitting on the couch. holey moley!

gender reveal: as y’all know, it’s a girl!

xoxo
