bennett’s communion

we celebrated sweet bennett’s communion last week. it was a beautiful moment, welcoming jesus into his heart.

it was a busy week for us {i can’t imagine what my sister, kim, had going on for herself! she’s always sooooooo busy with the boys!}. i needed to shop for the girls and myself. we needed new, pretty dresses for this special occasion! i needed to do the regular, every day stuff like school, take care of things for girls, myself, and get the house in order. i needed to finalize the details of bennett’s cake and make his cake topper! could i have used the word needed anymore?! ha!

i usually like to do a trial and error when it comes to creating something new. i need to make sure i have the right supplies and that the topper turns out perfect, cute, and right for the occasion. but i didn’t. i ran out of time and before i knew it, it was the night before his communion and we were tied up with celebrating my dad’s birthday and i didn’t get a chance to make a prototype and buy any additional supplies that i might need!

after my dad’s dinner celebration, i rushed out to the store to pick up his cake and decorative supplies for that, then rushed home to start making his cake topper. i had an idea in mind but that was an utter failure. i was at a standstill. what was i going to do??! thank goodness my craft supplies are like a mini hobby lobby downstairs, in the basement. i rummaged through my stuff and came up with a topper. i felt like i could have done better but with the means i had at hand, the topper turned out cute and perfectly matched the theme of his cake. phew!!! i was a mess for a hot second, i was so worried i wouldn’t be able to produce a topper my sister had asked of me and for bennett!

the day was going to be absolutely beautiful! warm temps and a sunny day! we got ready and arrived at the church early! just what we wanted. we found our pew and waited. mass began and it was beautiful to watch. these little souls, so smart and cute…accepting the body of christ. what a moment. bennett was so darn cute in his suit and bow tie and did so well. what a proud moment!

after church, we headed on over to mon ami gabi for lunch. i needed to get there to place the flowers and decorate the cake! i get stressed about doing stuff when people are there, so it was important for me to hurry the eff up! ha!

when i walked in, dave was already there. no matter but i wanted everything in place before the other guests arrived and before kim got there! i almost made it. i was still decorating the cake when a whole crowd came in. after a few tiny decor add on’s, the cake was done! yay! now, where’s my drink?!!

we mingled, sipped, and snacked. it was a really great time. lots of good peeps all in one place, celebrating bennett’s special day!

ellie’s baptism

we had the craziest start to our day…ugh, not in a good way. we poorly planned our time and ended up running sooooooo behind getting to the church for ellie’s baptism. how bad was that?! oh so bad. getting out the door is such a project, a circus, and so much of it depends on me and i always get the sh*t end of the stick on getting ready. yes, i am controlling but during times like this, i wish hc took the reigns on helping out with girls!! i have to get myself dressed, i had to prepare all their outfits, i had to style olive’s hair, i have to feed ellie {which of course hc can’t do}, i have to remember the camera, the baptism dress & accessories, dress the girls, and hc was the one who got ready first and left me with barely 40 minutes to get everything else done and feeding ellie takes at least 15 minutes of that time…soooo, therefore we were LATE.

we arrived at the church in record time. i think it took us 37 minutes or so…it was redic how fast hc was driving. we won’t mention the warp speed he was driving at. anyhoo, we arrived right at 9:30am…the music just started playing and the procession started. we were suppose to walk up with fr. ken but instead we were sitting in the pew. i was fretting over the fact that ellie wasn’t in her baptism gown. hc kept brushing it off to not change her until we got to the church. well, fr. ken nodded at us to step up to the altar in front of the parish and there was ellie…wearing a green dress. yup, my daughter for her baptism was wearing a green dress in front of everyone. there goes the symbolic white garment the baby is supposed to wear.

anyhoo, the service was amazing. fr. ken is so great and everything went smoothly thereafter. once we sat down the first time, we changed ellie into her gown and everything was just fine. fr. ken called us and we went through the ritual of denouncing satan, believing in God, dunking ellie in the holy water, anointing her forehead with the sacred oil, and lighting the candle as the light of christ. it was a beautiful ceremony!

after mass, we all lingered and took pictures. thank goodness for ellie’s godfather, huy, being a photographer! fr. ken came back down to join us and i was so happy to have connected with him a bit. i love that man…he’s such a inspiration. we took pics with fr. ken, the godparents ~ thuy and huy, and i was utterly grateful and thankful that huy took some amazing pics of the service. i am the one always taking pics and i was worried no one else would snap any good pics to remember!

we headed back home and soon everyone came over and we served lunch and had a great, great time with our friends and family. our luncheon turned into a causal dinner party! after most of the guests left, it was just my family lingering behind and we decided to have dinner together as well {plus, huy is rarely in town & we need to spend that time all together!}. everyone left to change their clothes and came back all comfy and casual. we ordered portillos {yum!} and hung out all night.

it was such a fabulous day! it started out super crazy and stressful and ended up being such a beautiful event. ellie being baptized was so moving and meaningful. she is now welcomed into the catholic faith and is truly a child of God.

daniel’s confirmation

my baby brain is in full force. i had this post all set to publish but i totally forgot! ugh! story of my life currently. i haven’t published a lot on my blog due to my forgetfulness!

so, our nephew, daniel, went through his confirmation a few weeks ago! we are so proud of him! i, honestly, have never been to many masses that aren’t catholic. i have been to a presbyterian mass recently and now, a lutheran mass. it’s very rare for me to attend other religious mass unless it’s a special occasion.

we arrived just in time to see daniel walk the procession. the mass, of course, was very different for me. a lot of people say that the lutheran religion and catholicism is very similar…maybe by certain beliefs but the masses are dramatically different!

anyhoo, it was a beautiful celebration and it was awesome to see daniel so grown up, involved, and reaching a millstone in his journey with the Lord!

after mass, we headed on over to the restaurant to have lunch with the family. we made a pit stop at starbucks because, since we were running behind that morning, we didn’t get to grab a snack or anything before mass and i was starving!!! being preggers and not eating right away is a bad combo! we enjoyed our lunch with the family…olive really enjoyed the pizza and drinks! she was too darling and it was fun to sit down with everyone and chill.

lunch was short and sweet and afterwards, we snapped some cute photos of daniel and grace outside. of course, i nabbed several dozen pics of olive! how could i not?! it was definitely a beautiful day!

r’s first communion

so proud and excited for my little nephew to receive his first communion!

our plan was to get to the church early and we actually succeeded! i am amazed that we did! the parking lot was already packed but we found parking just fine. we headed inside and we immediately ran into terry. he directed us where to go and we found kim, reagan, and bennett sitting in a pew.

we waited around for everyone else to show and for the mass to begin. the ceremony was a lot quicker than i thought with sixty kids being welcomed! olive was being super cute in her daddy’s arms. she was being so sweet, so calm, and so good.

it was then time for reagan to receive his first communion. i was so excited and proud! i couldn’t wait! our entire pew walked up and i was definitely the crazy aunt with the camera, snapping pics non-stop! i did get a few good ones…although i should have played around with my setting because all the pics were sooooo red/orange in color – so annoying!

after church, we all hung out for a bit but i couldn’t hang for long…i was way too hungry and tired! i felt bad i didn’t stick around for more pics but when i don’t eat…i get exhausted and sick! so, we swung by starbucks to grab drinks and snacks before we hit the restaurant.

loved the place my sister and brother chose for the lunch. it’s a place called neat kitchen and it was super cute and they had super yummy eats! we had our own private room and it was great to let the kids run around and we just relaxed in a comfortable environment. we enjoyed tasty libations and mingled with all the other guests. olive was having a  blast with her cousins and avery. when this babe feels comfortable, she is just a gem.

the food was finally served and it was soooo good! we had a great time trying all the dishes and all the flavors that was presented before us. olive ate like a champ! it goes to show how delicious it was when this babe eats and eats and eats! woo hoo!

it was time for dessert and the pretty cake was adorned with my handmade cake topper for reagan! i must admit, i loved how it turned out! i was at the craft store with miss olive, with no plans and little ideas in mind as i pursued the aisles of trinkets. i looked at different cake topper ideas on the internet and i just wasn’t sure what i wanted to do! plus, try having a toddler with ya when you are trying to figure it out! every two seconds, “what’s this? what’s this? what’s this?” hahaha! oh my! i finally grabbed the supplies i needed in hopes that this cake topper would miraculously look fabulous and that i had grabbed all the materials i would need! well, it turned out perfect for my perfect little nephew!

after cake was served, we hung out just for a bit more and then said our goodbyes. it was a really awesome morning and afternoon with friends and family. i enjoyed my time at church, at the restaurant, and most of all…celebrating my nephews journey to christ’s table. it was a great day indeed!

sunday funday

we had plans to meet olivia for brunch, so we decided to make it a fun filled day!

we started it off with a trip to the best church ever: st. clement. i love, love this church. for it’s beautiful architect, for it’s amazing parish, for our pastor fr. ken, and how it always recharges me in my faith. we have been attending mass here since 2010 and before that, i have never found a home like this one. i am sad we are not able to make it here on a weekly basis like we did before {since we’ve moved} but whenever hc and i get a chance, we will go.

after mass, we cruised on over to farmhouse chicago to meet olivia for brunch. she had made reservations, so we were seated right away. the start of our brunch did not go so well. per usual, i asked for decaf coffee and they didn’t have any. i was annoyed. no one caters to decaf drinkers. i get it. i get it. i am a minority but i matter too! i love coffee for its taste and flavor but ever since i was pregnant and nursing, i have not consumed caffeine. since i don’t need it, why bother introducing it into my body again?! coffee is like a routine, a habit, a mental start to my day and gosh darn it, i want my decaf!

the server seriously cowered from me. i know i can be demanding, direct, and very assertive in how i approach someone and i think i scared the shit out of him. eep. i didn’t mean to but when i am passionate about something, i come on strong. anyhoo, i asked the server if my husband was to run to starbucks to grab me my usual, could i drink it in the restaurant? after the catty session {meow} with him, he was like no problem {i think he didn’t want any more confrontations with me}. thank goodness.

we ordered our meals and drinks, and continued our fabulous conversations. olive was being so silly. she was rummaging through the diaper bag and found my sunglass case. she gravitated towards the lens cloth and found it so amusing! she would put it on her shirt and admire it. she would try to show it off the ladies who sat next to us at brunch. she was very interested in them! she kept smiling at them and was being so cute. she’s adorable.

we said our goodbyes and parted ways. we left each other with scheduled plans under our belts, so i was looking forward to seeing her again soon!

ash wednesday

here weeee goooo! it’s the start of the lenten season!

wow…i felt like it just popped up on me. i was so unprepared. it was like boom! it’s time to fast {i’m hungry!}, reflect on our relationship with God, repentance, penitence, basically go back to square one and it came out of nowhere. literally. wednesday came and i was like whaaaaa? it’s ash wednesday?!

anyhoozle, this journey that we embark on every year is about cleansing our minds. it’s a time to think and pray. to challenge yourself to be better, give back, forgive, and think about, truly, how fulfilling your life is. it’s not the material items that complete you but your kind actions, kind words, and kind thoughts that should make your life fulfilling and complete.

annndd, then there’s the part of giving something up. the question is what? what will i give up that will really be impactful? it’s a decision that has so much weight to me. i think about the suffering that Jesus endured for 40 days and nights and it makes me feel like giving up anything is so minuscule! nevertheless, it’s a reminder for us, that even though what we give up is nothing compared to Jesus’ suffering, it our way to bring ourselves close to God.

every year, i love this time because it really challenges me to be a better person. to slow down and appreciate the life all around me. to love the people around me even more. to try, try, try again because i am not perfect. i will stumble and fall. i will get back up to try again to be at my best.

via tandeminlove.com

you are dust, and to dust you shall return genesis 3:19

doesn’t my ashy cross look more like a thumbprint?! ha.

i’m excited to embark on this season of lent. a time to renew myself, work on my commitments, and give back. cheers to a fulfilling and grateful lenten season.

xoxo

sunny funday

our sunday funday consisted of great weather, warm temperature, church, brunch, furniture shopping, and long walks {a summer to do!}.

after mass, hc, olive, and i took a lovely stroll to our brunch restaurant of choice, frances. we love eating there and for some reason, after the 9:30am mass, there is always outdoor seating {any other time, there’s a wait}! we love brunching alfresco on sunny sunday mornings!

olive happily sat in her stroller while hc and i enjoyed a delicious brunch. i ordered the lox sandwich and hc ordered a spicy egg thingy breakfast. as usual, i wolfed down every delectable bit of it.

after a very relaxing time outdoors, we strolled our way back to the car. we were in debate of hitting a spot in the city to walk around a little bit more {and shop, of course!} or heading back to oakbrook to do some outdoor shopping there. we decided on the latter because we wanted to furniture shop and it was more convenient because all the furniture shops there were consolidated, therefore it was easier!

we hit a bump in traffic {perfect timing for baby o to take a nap!} and finally made our way to the mall. it was so darn lovely out! we nabbed some starbucks {of course} and hit all the furnishing stores. we were mainly shopping for side chairs. we need a few {some for the kitchen area and maybe some for the living room} and exchanged ideas on color, style, and size. oooohhhhhh, the options! it’s a lot fun until you have to really decide on what you are going to buy!

we found a piece or two at crate and barrel and restoration hardware but i am also a fan of online shopping. it’s a bit more difficult that way because you can’t see it live…the way it feels, sits, and the dimensions, but i love gaining ideas that way to help with the decision process and clarifying the aesthetics.

via tandeminlove.com

anyhoo, the day was perfect. i loved seeing familiar faces at mass, being outside enjoying the beautiful weather, and spending time with my lovely family.

it was a happy sunday funday!

olive’s baptism

what a wonderful, beautiful day it was! it was so exciting to have olive’s baptism finally here. i was filled with so much anticipation!

i was a bit nervous if olive would get fussy. she does get temperamental sometimes {duh…like her momma!} and can get cranky. we had a lot going on that morning too. getting olive up, feeding her, getting her dressed, getting grace ready, me and the hubs finalizing our outfits, packing up our stuff, getting out the door on time, and picking up some last minute items along the way!

via tandeminlove.com

[olive’s beautiful, handmade baptism dress by tashina // it’s made out of french chantilly lace, silk charmeuse, and silk chiffon]

well, hc sped his way to the city, he was nervous we were going to be late, {something he never really does} and we got there on time {phew!}. our party was already there waiting outside of the church, we quickly greeted them and scurried inside so we could get olive changed into her beautiful baptism gown.

mass began and we started out in the procession. up went the alter boys, the liturgical ministers, us, the godparents, and then father ken. we bowed before the alter and walked up to stand beside the font. father ken came up and asked us what name do we give her and what we were asking for of God’s church today. after that, we were dismissed and walked back to our pew to be seated.

via tandeminlove.com

[here we go! rite of passage]

then right after the homily, we were asked to come up again to go through the rites of baptism for olive. father ken anointed her with oil, referenced the white garment, lit the baptism candle, and recited the prayer over ears and mouth.

then came the dunking moment…i chose to have olive fully immersed into the holy water. to closely replicate and reference what john the batiste did, according to the bible. during the homily, we stripped olive down and draped her in a white towel. once fr. ken finished asking the questions to the parish and us {ya know…the do we reject satan, etc.}, he reached for olive and pulled her out from the towel and fully dunked her into the font three times…in the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit.

olive was in good spirits! she came back safely into my arms and the cozy towel. fr. ken finished the rites, olive was announced as the newest member of the church, the parish applauded, and we were seated. it was awesome! it was such a wonderful, special moment…i was so happy to share it with our church, so excited fr. ken performed the rite, and so proud to have kim and terry as olive’s godparents.

we rented out a private room at d.o.c wine bar. it was spectacular. it was such a large space, there were couches and chairs, and a fireplace. a perfect space for the kids to run around and hang out. they had set up long tables for everyone to sit and eat. the bartender was so accommodating and the food was absolutely delicious. the whole wait staff there was fantastic.

i had purchased a cake and had it redecorated to an all white buttercream frosting. i made fun toppers for olive’s cake and fashioned pretty, blooming peonies onto the top of the fluffy, yummy cake. i loved how it turned out…so whimsy and cute!

we trekked our way home to get into comfy clothes and relax. after a bit, we headed on over to my parent’s for dinner and olive’s aunties showered her with more gifts! her first tiffany gifts…so spoiled! i am so thankful to everyone for all the generous gifts she received…olive is so blessed to be so loved!

our best day ever on refinery29

i am so excited to have our wedding featured on refinery29!

almost three years later and it’s pretty awesome to have our wedding still talked about. it was, seriously, the best day ever. without that wonderful, euphoric, romantic, amazing, whimsical, lively, dynamic, exciting day…there wouldn’t have been the next best day ever…giving birth to miss olive!

our wedding was like a dream come true. so cliche right?! but it was. everything was perfect. celebrating our union with our friends and family was a recipe for unparalleled goodness. hc and i had the best time reveling in the love and joy of our guests…how could it not be fabulous when everyone is celebrating, eating, and drinking? best combos ever.

from our rehearsal, to our rehearsal dinner, to the wedding day, the sunday brunch, and then onto an alfresco dinner at my parent’s with our family’s out of town guest, it was a whirlwind of delight. the next morning we sped off on our honeymoon floating on cloud nine, full of happiness.
