christmas ’20

christmas was in question, just like every holiday this year. for thanksgiving, we all spent it with our nuclear family but for christmas…we thought, let’s do this.

it went back and forth, whether or not we were going to have it at our house or my parent’s house. we weren’t sure if we wanted to have all that commotion over at my parent’s since they were recovering from covid and my dad was still very weak and exhausted. my mom insisted that it would be best to have it there because it would allow my dad to rest in the comfort of his own home versus our house. so, we settled on my parent’s house!

we did our usual. my sister kim cooked most of the meal and we brought ancillary items. LOL i brought desserts and thuy brought…oh my gosh. i don’t remember what she brought…a salad? she was going to make an apple cobbler but there were a lot of desserts, she last minute nixed it.

i chuckle at the fact that we were determined to start early and end early. bahhhahahaha. nope. we all said we would meet at my parent’s around 2pm. that turned into 3pm. then 4pm. we were going to eat around 5 or 6pm and that turned into our usual 8pm. doh! plus, dan and agata typically celebrate with her family first and they don’t usually get over to mom and dad’s until 7pm…so in the end. it was allllll the same. LOL

we nibbled on a charcuterie board, drank wine, the kids played, assembled gingerbread houses and trees, and when we sat down for dinner, my dad said a prayer. like every year, we cleaned up, readied desserts and opened gifts upstairs! the kids were so excited! this was the first year ellie was so into it. last year she just wandered around but this year she was like, where are my gifts. LOL she kept saying, ‘i don’t see my name!’ as she would look for presents addressed to her.

and of course, we took our annual pj photos with everyone! tashina and huy couldn’t be with us {so sad!} but we were able to FaceTime them and include them in the picture like always! so perfect!

we were so tired christmas eve, i forgot to get the girls to put out cookies and carrots for santa and his reindeers! i did it myself but bummed they didn’t experience it with me! then we put them to bed and i forgot to remind olive to wake me up before she goes downstairs. another fail!

so – early christmas morning, i wake up to olive not in bed! ugh!! darn it! i missed her surprised face when she saw santa’s gifts!!!! i had to drag ellie out of bed, what a sleepy head, and go find olive. she was so excited over what santa had brought!

they went through their stockings and we opened up all the gifts from us. olive was besides herself at the huge LOL house santa dropped off. once all the presents were opened and cleaned up, we jumped on breakfast. hearty for us and cinnamon rolls and sprinkles for the girls!

it was a special morning. it was slow, calm, heartwarming and sweet. oh how i enjoy these moments with my babes. their sweetness, innocence, appreciation, and love for everything makes my heart melt.

later that day, we usually host christmas day for hc’s side of the family but obviously with covid, that was not happening. instead, we had his sister and mom over. hc cooked ham and bunch of other delicious sides. he always does such a great job creating the menu and working hard to make it wonderful.

we hung out, chillaxed, drank, ate, conversed and reveled in the evening’s calm and brightness of christmas. after dinner, i served desserts {cookies, peppermint bark, cake} and we opened presents.

what i have loved about being in this season of covid is the intimacy, quietness, and slowness of everything. it’s nice to not be rushed and overwhelmed with all the craziness that life was. it’s sweet, calm, and full of depth. a year that no one wanted but we all figured it out.

nye ’18

hello 2019!

hc was at work and i was at home with the kiddos. i had done a lot of my prep work the days prior – grabbing drinks, food, accessories, ordering balloons, buying decor, etc. i knew i had to get it done before monday because i knew monday was going to be jam packed full of nothing! haha!

our day started out slow. we woke up late and hit up the grocery store for some last minute items. the girls were too adorable shopping with me. ellie insisted on sitting in the cart and olive wanted to grab the mini red shopping cart and help me shop! it then ended up with ellie wanting down and helping olive push the cart around the store and filling it with goodies! it was sooooooo cute!

once we got home…it was already early afternoon! i started prepping some things but before i knew it, it was ellie’s nap time. i put the, getting sick, little babe down, right then thuy was knocking on the door. she wanted to come over early and bake cupcakes at the house for the kids. olive was quite excited to help thuy bake! she loves to help in the kitchen. she helped mix and decorate them and she definitely had a fun time!

hc came home early and was surprised i hadn’t finished decorating! ha! like i said, it was a slow morning and afternoon. i started my hustle and got everything dunzo by 5pm, got myself ready, and continued to do the final touches in the house – lighting candles, turning on mood lighting, hc started a fire, and then i started to put together my cheese plate.

i also created a champagne bar! i collected veuve cliquot, moët et chandon, la marca prosecco to make fun cocktails! i had raspberry sorbet, sugar cubes, mint, limes, lemons, berries, bitters, and rock candy sticks for an endless combo of tasty beverages!

everyone slowly trickled in around 6/7pm and kim started cooking her dinner for the night. she decided to make a shrimp diavolo, arugula salad, and pull apart garlic bread. yuuuuummmmmmm. dinner was ready by 8:30pm, which was perfect for new year’s eve! eating late, serving dessert late, and then counting down the new york’s new year is how we roll!

this year was just family and it was perfect! although we were missing our usual suspects – you know who you are! our evening consisted of eating well, drinking delicious libations, and cheered to the new year together!

2019 – don’t disappoint us, you’ve got some heavy competition!

hello christmas decor

we usually decorate around thanksgiving or right after but this year we were in slow motion, at least i was. i am usually the one that ignites everything and gets things going but this year, i was lethargic and slow. so, decorating our house got off to a late start and it took us three days to finally finish! holy moly!

as we do every year, we blasted christmas music, imbibed some beverages, and had a jolly good time decorating. since it was taking us forever to decorate, each day was filled with silly little obstacles! hc broke a bunch of stuff off the mantle one night, we didn’t have the right screws to hang the garland on the outside frame of the front door, and we struggled to find some of our decor from last year. ha! so bananas!

well slowly but surely, we got it done! it always feels great to see your abode deck out in holiday gear! the only part that makes me very sad is when we take it down. ok, ok, i won’t mention that again! anyhoozle, i love christmas and i love decorating and i love everything that goes with it! baking cookies, seeing the city all decked out, holiday parties, seeing santa, drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows, oh the list goes on and on!

olive had a great time decorating. it was so cute to watch her, she was amazed by the ornaments. it was hilarious to watch because she would put ornaments on the tree but then she would take them off and put them back into the box. haha! she did very well though. she is always such a great helper and loves to participate in everything. she’ll say, “i help! i help!”. i love it!

once we finished all the trimmings around the house, the tree was our final stop, we decorated it with all our fun ornaments, and olive helped put the star on top of the tree with her dada. it was sooooo cute! she knew what she had to do and she tried and tried to reach for the branch but she was just a few inches too short so hc helped her out and got that star situated and pretty! ta da! our christmas decorating was dunzo! woot woot!

it was definitely a team effort and now our house feels christmassy and pretty! i love the smell of fresh pine, scented candles, and the pretty glow of lights all around! olive was such a fantastic helper, i love how this will be her third christmas but the first one where she is so interactive and is able to really enjoy the whole process. it’s pretty awesome.

well, merry merry everyone! we hope your house is warm, cozy, festive, and fun like ours! happy day!

santa’s bag: the ultimate christmas gift tracking app

can you believe christmas is just around the corner {12 days left}?! we’re all doing our best to get everything prepped and ready for the big day {so much to do!}! in between shopping and putting up the tree and hanging the christmas lights, we’re all rushing about! christmas shopping is one of those things that can sometimes get pushed to the sidelines and forgotten until the very last minute, when you end up scrambling for gifts {not this year!}.

luckily, the folks over at clay pot software LLC have created an app that makes christmas shopping easier: santa’s bag. already featured on Forbes’ “8 santa-approved apps for big savings this season “, the app is proving to be a favorite among christmas shoppers {pretty cool, right?!}. the app lets you set a budget for all your christmas gifts, and then import a list of recipients from your contacts {so easy}.

via tandeminlove.com

via tandeminlove.com

you can then assign a gift {or two, or three} to each recipient, as well as their own individual budget. you can then organize the items based on recipient or place where you’re buying the gift from, so your list of presents can become a shopping list with the tap of a finger. once you’ve purchased the items, you can then input the total cost of the gift, and the app shows you how much total you’ve spent for each recipient, and whether you’ve gone over or under the budget. isn’t that just spectacular?!

via tandeminlove.com

via tandeminlove.com

of course, because you’ll want to make sure that you’ve got this app running while you’re out shopping, it’s important to remember to close any other apps you might have running. a blog post on Pocket Fruity says that forgetting to close apps you’re no longer using is one of the reasons why your battery doesn’t last as long as it should {duh! great advice!}. they also add that, “another way to prolong your battery life… is to adjust the brightness of your screen to a more suitable, less energy-consuming level. you’ll find this option somewhere in your mobile settings.” i love that…the brightness on my phone has been adjusted and it totally helps. if you’re going to be using this app the way you’re supposed to, you’ll want to make sure that your phone’s battery lasts long enough to get your christmas shopping done. we all have been in that situation, no? i definitely need my phone battery to last, especially since i will be on it a lot while i christmas shop!

well, lovies, I hope you find this app and tips useful. i sure do! christmas shopping will now be a breeze, organized, and on budget!

do you use any other apps to help you prep for the holidays?

winter tablescape inspiration

christmas is upon us {woo hoo}! the holidays are a magical time. i’m so in the mood to decorate and be jolly {even after a few crazy whirlwind weeks i’ve had}! decking the halls is such a favorite pastime of mine. i love getting creative and thinking of different ways to brighten up the house in a very festive way. nothing feels better than a dressed up home, all cozy and pretty.

december is all about entertaining, having family and friends stop by {anytime}, and having a cup of peppermint hot chocolate ready for any of your guests! with all that in mind, i’ve been scheming up some grand ol’ ideas for a festive, fun winter tablescape. i love modern, earthy, and bright aesthetics. so, as you can see down below, the elements i picked out in my mood board definitely reflect my descriptive words!

via tandeminlove.com

runner from goldandglamour // holla sign from ohdierliving // candles from restoration hardware // name plates from lhcalligraphy // napkins and placemats from restoration hardware // glass and gold ornaments from serena and lily // gold chargers from trisheye // fraser fir garland from poeboy tree farm // stockholm walnut extendable table form modani

i love the walnut table from modani. it’s the perfect foundation and color to the whole winter scheme. it lends to the organic feel of the decor and sets the tone for the entire holiday look of the table. i love the sleek, edgy, and clean lines of the design but it’s softened by the organic material of the table and warm color.

the next layer would be the fun and modern runner! how cool is that pattern?! i love the black and white stripes, accented by the gold dots. it’s like tim burton partnered with kate spade and they created this table runner! this pattern and color adds the perfect pop of pizzaz to your holiday table. i love this design because i want it to stand out, especially since the rest of the decor is more muted and neutral. this runner will perfectly balance out the look whole of the table.

this holla sign is a favorite of mine! it’s so fun and festive! it’s a conversation piece and adds the right amount of holiday charm to your table decor. i’d place this sign right in the center of the table, on the runner, and flank it with white candles in varying heights. i would then place the pine garland in and around the center pieces and extend it out to where you have enough room for your end place settings. i would then scatter and entwine the glass and gold ornaments into the pine garland to finish off the holiday look.

last but not least, to finalize your winter tablescape, i would then place these lovely gold chargers on top of white placemats {and white napkins with walnut colored wood napkins rings} and place white plates onto the gold chargers to balance out the look. i am so in love with these wood calligraphy name plates {they can also be painted gold by the seller or left natural}, it’s the perfect and final touch to your festive, holiday winter table spread!! one last idea…add/tie a sprig of thyme to each name plate to complete your table design!

viola! there ya have it! a beautiful winter tablescape that is perfect for any party this holiday season. *sigh* it definitely has inspired me to have a dinner party this month! i hope you have been inspired too. tell me my lovies, what’s your decor must have for the perfect winter tablescape??!

xoxo
