christmas popcorn

while i was at target the other day, the idea of making christmas popcorn {literally} popped into my head. i was super thrilled at the thought! so, i grabbed a bunch of ingredients and put it into the shopping cart to create the yummy goodness.

my first attempt was an utter failure. our microwave is old, it’s a hand me down from the house and it’s quite unpredictable on how it heats our food. we have a new one, but we won’t put it out until we remodel our kitchen. so i burnt the popcorn and burned the chocolate. fail. i was super bummed and a bit frustrated.

i cleared my head and tried again. this time, it was a complete success! i figured out the right cooking time for the popcorn and decided to melt the chocolate over the stove instead. perfecto. the popcorn was fluffy and the chocolate melted seamlessly {no clumps, no seizing, no graininess}.

[mulit-tasking: writing thank you cards and collecting ingredients for my baking excursion]

as for the popcorn, you can either pop it the old fashioned way, buy kernels and pop it over the stove {it depends on if you want your popcorn free of other flavors}. i chose to use the microwave bags of buttered popcorn.

what you will need:

four bags of microwavable buttered popcorn bags

two 12 oz. bags of white chocolate morsels

one 12 oz. bag of milk chocolate morsels

one bag of mini m&m’s

red and green nonpereils

one bag of mini pretzels

one dozen 32 oz wide mouth ball jars

red twine or raffia to decorate with

[melting white chocolate // use a double broiler (fill the bottom pot with one inch of water) boil the water and then turn down the heat // add the chocolate to the top pot – constantly stir the chocolate until there are a few lumps left, remove the chocolate and continue to stir…it will all melt eventually from the heat]

i started with small batches of popcorn. i used two bowls to separate it. a big bowl to make the christmas popcorn in and a smaller bowl to house all the popped corn. i put a small batch of popcorn into the big bowl and drizzled it with the melted white chocolate. i then sprinkled in red and green nonpareils and mini m&m’s. i then took another batch of popcorn and repeated the steps until i used up all the fresh popcorn and all the nooks and crannies where filled with tasty sugary morsels.

after i made the popcorn, i then dipped pretzels in first, the white chocolate and then i made a batch in milk chocolate. i used wax paper to place all the dipped pretzels and plus, it’s easy to pull off the finished goods. i sprinkled the dipped pretzels in green and red sugar, and rainbow nonpareils to dress them up.

i let the popcorn and pretzels dry and harden up for about an hour. after everything was set, i packed up all the goodies in large ball jars {i love ball jars…so many fun uses}. i like the wide mouth jars so it’s easier to transfer the goodies in and easy to pull it out and eat!

via tandeminlove.com[white chocolate pretzels]

i packed the christmas popcorn first and then topped off the jar with the white dipped pretzels and then the milk chocolate dipped pretzels. i wrote merry christmas on little tags and used raffia string and twine to tie it together for a finished festive look.

christmas in the city

every year, i love to go downtown with the family to enjoy christmas in the city. i love to see all the decor, the bustling of the sidewalks and stores, and experience some typical holiday activities.

it was crowded. the weather was unseasonably warm, hitting 50 degrees and such. so, the masses were out. people were swarming everywhere and it was very difficult for us to maneuver through the streets with a car. we finally made it to a parking garage {um…block 37, you have the craziest parking garage} and went on our merry way to meet up with the rest of the fam.

via tandeminlove.com

[daley center christkindlmarket – i don’t know how anyone got anything there…it was soooo jam packed]

we decided to take the elevator because we had the stroller, ah, big mistake. it took us at least 10-15 minutes to finally nab one and it was the worst elevator ride i have ever been on {you can get details in person if you’d like to know the nightmare experience}. we finally made it to the seventh floor to nab some grub! kim and famille were already there. we said our hello’s then walked around to see what we wanted to eat. i love that olive is at a place where she will eat our food. so whatever we get, she will munch on. it’s so much easier than hauling her food around. especially if it needed to warmed or just the clean up was a pain.

after eating, we finally made it up to tree! the tree sits in the walnut room and is 45 feet high! every year, macy’s decorates it with a different theme. the kids got to enjoy the tree while i nursed olive. thank goodness it’s in their furniture section. i got a comfy couch to sit on while i nursed her!

after viewing the trees, we walked over to their ornament department but before we headed into the ornament section, bennett and reagan dropped off their wish lists for santa in their north pole mailbox! it was so cute, i love the christmas season and spirit…it’s so magical.

macy’s has this section where they have all their christmas ornaments, decor, and goodies all in one place. there is so much to look at! it’s pretty cool to see all their themed trees and we get to pick out some fun ornaments for our tree; we each pick out an ornament each year to build our tree swag!

after we hit up the ornament department, we grabbed ourselves some starbucks. i bought olive the vanilla milk, she has never had cow’s milk and i thought it would be great for her to try. oh boy, she loved it. she drank and drank and drank it. i then gave her a madeline to nibble on {in a time lapse of an hour} and then i handed her the milk carton again. we were chillin’ on the second floor at block 37, with the famille, i was sitting on a chair with olive when a stream of vomit flew out of her mouth!!! oh em gee. it splashed onto her pants, shirt, my coat, my shirt, and all over my leggings. what. a. disaster. hc and terry took olive {screaming btw} and ran to the bathroom to clean up. there was a huge line for the water closets, i swiftly passed all of them and headed for the sink. i explained myself to the gals waiting and they were all so understanding. they were like…been there, done that and so empathetic with me.

christmukkah

dana and i were able to meet up for lunch during this holiday craziness that has enveloped us. we were so excited! we had tried the week prior but we were so busy, we couldn’t get together but not the following week {score}! woo!

of course, we decided to meet up at our favorite place: southport grocery. we love eating there! olive and i were totally on time {can you believe that?!}. we got there right when we said we would; the only reason why we were on time was because olive didn’t take her morning nap, she woke up so late that morning that it was not in the cards. although she did end up falling asleep on the ride in, which was totally fine and perfect. a little cat nap is what she needed.

dana had arrive there first {and early} and put our name in, there was a bit of a wait so she trekked on over to cvs to pick up a few things. i arrived and scored a front parking spot across from the restaurant.  the little babes was sleeping so i kept her in her car seat…thank goodness she is still small enough for that car seat and i can keep her sleeping! as i was finishing up, i saw my eye doctor walking down the street and we waved hello! {i have been going to the same place on southport for over ten years!} we walked inside the restaurant and they were ready for us, just then, dana walked in as well – perfect.

our brunch day was a designated holiday gift exchange. i brought dana a hanukkah gift and she brought me a christmas gift! although i didn’t get her eight gifts…it was a darn, good gift! : P anyhoo, i opened up my gift {wrapped in a plastic bag from jerusalem} and discovered the cutest little knit ornament! it was a llama from peru!! i love it! she had visited her dad, while he was on business, in peru and brought me back the gift…so sweet!

after we exchanged our gifts, our delicious food arrived and we noshed away, making our bellies and minds happy. we typically get the same dishes every time. once in a blue moon, we will change it up but we are creatures of habit!

after we finished eating, dana and i decided to make gift baskets for some people on our list. i love southport grocery for all their little goodies inside. they use fresh, organic ingredients for their food and their little grocery store inside is so cute! we picked out some yummy stuff and they wrapped it all up in pretty metal basket. we were so excited when we saw the packaging. what a great place to build a gift for anyone!

while we waited for our baskets to get wrapped, dana and i trekked over to anthropologie {of course!}. we perused the whole place and commented on all the stuff we love or want. i ended up buying some candles and wrapping decor for the christmas presents i needed to wrap.

deck the halls!

we finally and slowly decorated our home. annndd, it’s still not done. well, let me explain. since we are in a new home {and first christmas here!}, there’s so much more space and so much more we can do! so, the old decorations we had at our place in chicago totally suffice, but we want to do so much more {in time my dear, in time…what’s that proverbial phrase? patience is a virtue. hmph}.

we did our usual routine, we whipped out the decor, turned on the christmas tunes, and drank some wine! well, this time around {with us having olive} it was quite the slow process. there was a lot of holding her. stopping. there was a lot of giggle time. stopping. there was a lot of her crying because she either wanted to touch the ornaments or just be in our arms. stopping. wow…decorating took a l o n g time. it actually became a part deux!

well we did it! we finally got our decorations up. it is still a work in progress, i am still adding little things here and there as i assess how ‘festive’ our home is. i definitely don’t like getting too crazy {haha…some might argue} with the decor but i know that there isn’t enough oomph yet in our house for it to scream holiday!  slowly but surely, it will all come together…

in the meantime, enjoy the pics and captions! some things have already changed since i took these photos, but naturally that will be for next year’s holiday post! 😉

santa’s bag: the ultimate christmas gift tracking app

can you believe christmas is just around the corner {12 days left}?! we’re all doing our best to get everything prepped and ready for the big day {so much to do!}! in between shopping and putting up the tree and hanging the christmas lights, we’re all rushing about! christmas shopping is one of those things that can sometimes get pushed to the sidelines and forgotten until the very last minute, when you end up scrambling for gifts {not this year!}.

luckily, the folks over at clay pot software LLC have created an app that makes christmas shopping easier: santa’s bag. already featured on Forbes’ “8 santa-approved apps for big savings this season “, the app is proving to be a favorite among christmas shoppers {pretty cool, right?!}. the app lets you set a budget for all your christmas gifts, and then import a list of recipients from your contacts {so easy}.

via tandeminlove.com

via tandeminlove.com

you can then assign a gift {or two, or three} to each recipient, as well as their own individual budget. you can then organize the items based on recipient or place where you’re buying the gift from, so your list of presents can become a shopping list with the tap of a finger. once you’ve purchased the items, you can then input the total cost of the gift, and the app shows you how much total you’ve spent for each recipient, and whether you’ve gone over or under the budget. isn’t that just spectacular?!

via tandeminlove.com

via tandeminlove.com

of course, because you’ll want to make sure that you’ve got this app running while you’re out shopping, it’s important to remember to close any other apps you might have running. a blog post on Pocket Fruity says that forgetting to close apps you’re no longer using is one of the reasons why your battery doesn’t last as long as it should {duh! great advice!}. they also add that, “another way to prolong your battery life… is to adjust the brightness of your screen to a more suitable, less energy-consuming level. you’ll find this option somewhere in your mobile settings.” i love that…the brightness on my phone has been adjusted and it totally helps. if you’re going to be using this app the way you’re supposed to, you’ll want to make sure that your phone’s battery lasts long enough to get your christmas shopping done. we all have been in that situation, no? i definitely need my phone battery to last, especially since i will be on it a lot while i christmas shop!

well, lovies, I hope you find this app and tips useful. i sure do! christmas shopping will now be a breeze, organized, and on budget!

do you use any other apps to help you prep for the holidays?

winter tablescape inspiration

christmas is upon us {woo hoo}! the holidays are a magical time. i’m so in the mood to decorate and be jolly {even after a few crazy whirlwind weeks i’ve had}! decking the halls is such a favorite pastime of mine. i love getting creative and thinking of different ways to brighten up the house in a very festive way. nothing feels better than a dressed up home, all cozy and pretty.

december is all about entertaining, having family and friends stop by {anytime}, and having a cup of peppermint hot chocolate ready for any of your guests! with all that in mind, i’ve been scheming up some grand ol’ ideas for a festive, fun winter tablescape. i love modern, earthy, and bright aesthetics. so, as you can see down below, the elements i picked out in my mood board definitely reflect my descriptive words!

via tandeminlove.com

runner from goldandglamour // holla sign from ohdierliving // candles from restoration hardware // name plates from lhcalligraphy // napkins and placemats from restoration hardware // glass and gold ornaments from serena and lily // gold chargers from trisheye // fraser fir garland from poeboy tree farm // stockholm walnut extendable table form modani

i love the walnut table from modani. it’s the perfect foundation and color to the whole winter scheme. it lends to the organic feel of the decor and sets the tone for the entire holiday look of the table. i love the sleek, edgy, and clean lines of the design but it’s softened by the organic material of the table and warm color.

the next layer would be the fun and modern runner! how cool is that pattern?! i love the black and white stripes, accented by the gold dots. it’s like tim burton partnered with kate spade and they created this table runner! this pattern and color adds the perfect pop of pizzaz to your holiday table. i love this design because i want it to stand out, especially since the rest of the decor is more muted and neutral. this runner will perfectly balance out the look whole of the table.

this holla sign is a favorite of mine! it’s so fun and festive! it’s a conversation piece and adds the right amount of holiday charm to your table decor. i’d place this sign right in the center of the table, on the runner, and flank it with white candles in varying heights. i would then place the pine garland in and around the center pieces and extend it out to where you have enough room for your end place settings. i would then scatter and entwine the glass and gold ornaments into the pine garland to finish off the holiday look.

last but not least, to finalize your winter tablescape, i would then place these lovely gold chargers on top of white placemats {and white napkins with walnut colored wood napkins rings} and place white plates onto the gold chargers to balance out the look. i am so in love with these wood calligraphy name plates {they can also be painted gold by the seller or left natural}, it’s the perfect and final touch to your festive, holiday winter table spread!! one last idea…add/tie a sprig of thyme to each name plate to complete your table design!

viola! there ya have it! a beautiful winter tablescape that is perfect for any party this holiday season. *sigh* it definitely has inspired me to have a dinner party this month! i hope you have been inspired too. tell me my lovies, what’s your decor must have for the perfect winter tablescape??!

xoxo

christmas part two

on christmas day, we ventured out into woodstock to visit olivia!

she was in town with her boyfriend aaron {they currently live in florida} and i was so excited to be able to see her!  we had planned on going over to her parent’s house {can you believe that i’ve known olivia for 6+ years and i have never met her parents or her brother henry?!} and hang out on christmas day.

we slept over at hc parent’s house due to our logistics that day.  we got up and aunt wendy so kindly cooked us a christmas pancake breakfast!  she makes some really delicious cakes!  also, dick opened his gift from jane…she commissioned a canvas wrapped collage of olive pictures!

via tandeminlove.com

[cute canvas wrapped collage of olive]

we gathered ourselves and finally headed our way to woodstock.  a half hour later, we were at our destination.  it was so good to see miss olivia!!!  we were greeted by her family and the socializing began.  we were offered drinks {orange juice for me and beer for hc!} and we cozied right in.  they were in awe over little miss olive.  between mrs. gantner and olivia, olive was passed back and forth…so nice for mommy to be hands free!

we ended up staying at their house for over three hours!  it was so nice to sit, relax, and catch up.  it was so wonderful to get to know her parents, they are such lovely people!  it meant a lot to us to be there!

here’s a fun fact:  when olivia and i were visiting her sister claire in d.c. {i was 4 weeks pregnant at the time and didn’t know it!}, we were walking through the grocery store across the street from her sister’s place {picking up taco ingredients for dinner, like lime for the guac!}, discussing baby names.  that’s when i decided i loved the name olive or the french pronunciation & spelling of olivia {with an accent over the a}.  crazy right?  that’s the true story behind baby olive’s name!

i didn’t want to leave but we needed to get back to the heintz’s for the second part of christmas day.  they were hosting it at their house and everyone was already there by the time we got back.

appetizers were being served and the party was in full swing!  we greeted and chitchatted with all the cousins, aunts, and uncles.  baby olive was immediately snatched away and passed amongst the family members!  i was then bombarded with gifts for baby olive.  so sweet of everyone for thinking of her.  it’s so fun to open up presents full of cuteness.

the kids ate first {mickey d cheeseburgers and fries} and then ran away to play the evening away.  then the adults got to eat!  i was hungry!  the lasagna was very delicious.  we conversed, mingled, and hung out the rest of the evening.  after much imbibing and noshing, we were ready to head home.

it was an amazing week and christmas celebration with all our friends and family.  we are so lucky to have such special, wonderful people in our lives.  God bless everyone!
