lazy day with matt

we set up a lovely brunch date with our dear friend matt. he’s been on a roll lately with suggestions on where we go. typically it’s me coming up with different places to go to but we’ve been exploring the area close to where he lives lately. which is totally fine with me!

this time around, we went to a place called over easy. a simple, small brunch place near lincoln square. it was a beautiful day out and we were actually ‘on time’. which means a leeway of 10 minutes. haha! we met matt outside and we were seated right away {they told matt a few minutes but by the time i walked up, the table was ready}.

matt was catching me up on some major life changes for him! life’s twists and turns sometimes throw you sharp curves and loops along the way but no matter what, we persevere and march on. i do love that about my friends. no matter what challenges they face, they charge on with positivity and solutions. even when it does seem like it’s not the most positive moment, we can see the bigger picture.

olive was being quite shy when we first got there…the usual. after a half hour or so, she started to warm up. she’s been a bit rebellious about the highchair of late. she’s not a fan of sitting in one, she prefers to sit in a big girl chair like her mom; only when i can peel her off my lap to sit in her own chair!

after brunch, we headed on over to our favorite stomping ground: starbucks! there, we ordered drinks and just chilled. i loved this part. olive roamed around and matt and i continued to chit chat. it’s nice when olive can entertain herself or feel good that she won’t wander away from me. ’cause all you mamas know that being out and trying to focus on something else besides your kids can be a great task!

after several hours of hanging out together, we needed to go. i know olive needed a nap and it was just about the right time for her to knock out. it was a fabulous time with matt, as usual. we greatly enjoyed our brunch date and can’t wait until we meet up again…hopefully next time with our husbands!

bang bang pie squared

so, my first visit at bang bang pie was alright. take away the girl at the counter, it was a passable visit but could it have been a better visit if that girl was more invested in her customer’s experience? absolutely. bang bang left me with a mediocre feeling and the chances of me to ever return were very slim and would i recommend this place to others? most likely not.

shortly after i blogged about my visit to this restaurant, i received a dm, on instagram, from the owner of bang bang. honestly, i was surprised. one, i wasn’t expecting it and two, i thought…shit, what did i write about my experience there again?! haha. i read his gracious message and was touched that he took the time to react. we dm’d and emailed each other back and forth about the experience and he invited me, olive, and a guest to come back for a proper bang bang experience.

i was impressed just by that gesture itself. i told michael that the fact that he had reached out to me completely changed my opinion about the restaurant and because he cared that much about his customer’s experience, i was sold and smitten. his ownership and passion is what i admire! i greatly appreciated his efforts and needed to find a moment within our crazy schedules to head out that way again for brunch.

weeks rolled by and i kept on stalling on when we could head out there to eat brunch and meet michael. i wanted to go with hc but he only has weekends available and all of june had been crazy and booked up for us. so, finally i scheduled a time to visit the restaurant with my darling friend dana. yay!

it was an absolutely gorgeous day. seriously perfect. the temps were in the mid seventies and it was sunshiny. a wonderful combo for us to sit outside. when we got there, we perused the menu before we ordered. the guy at the counter was crazy friendly. he was attentive and kind. as i was placing my order, dana walked outside to find a sweet spot for us to sit at.

i asked the gentleman if michael was in and he pointed to a man engrossed in a conversation with another man. i didn’t want to bother him, so i placed our order. per usual, i asked for a side fruit but there was none. just checking. hehe. anyhoo, i ordered drinks for us and the man behind the counter said he would bring them out to our table! nice!

dana found a perfect sitting spot and soon our food was brought out to us. everyone was super friendly and observant. we enjoyed the delicious food {i ordered the gravy and a side of candied bacon for me and olive} and the wonderful outdoor space that they have there. we sat there for over two hours! how can you not? it was perfect out.

near the end of our visit, olive was wandering around chasing the pigeons and sparrows pecking around. she found it quite humorous to do so! as i was walking towards olive to have her come over to where we were sitting, michael came up to me and asked if i was thu…why yes i am! we said our hellos and gave hugs…we finally met in person! he is kind, charismatic, and friendly. an easy guy to talk to! we walked back over to dana and chit chatted for a bit more.

after several minutes, we parted ways. dana and i continued to chill for just a bit longer, when michael came back out and presented us with complimentary meals, on him, for both me and dana. so unexpected and absolutely exalted over his actions. he did not need to do that nor did he have to but we were so impressed by his will and care that we both were thoroughly sold inside and out.

dana made mention about how he talked highly of his employees and she loved hearing that he cared.  he also talked about the importance of giving his customers what they want and that it mattered a lot to him to not disappoint. through all of this, it was very apparent by his actions.

michael is a man who greatly cares about his business, his employees, his customers, and loves to uphold what his restaurant is all about. he is ostensibly professional and caring. every aspect of it matters to him and he takes such pride in it. he took my impinged experience and turned it into one that will positively resonate with me. i will forward that karma to my friends and family and strangers who are looking for a wonderful place to eat.

[this is totally safe, right?]

it was a fabulous experience overall. i am thankful michael had reached out to me and changed my opinion about his restaurant. his ownership is empowering in itself! i can’t wait to visit again, for the full bang bang experience, and this time with the hubby in tow!

fun, rainy day

my day started off kind of crappy. yes, yes it did. olive had regressed a bit in her sleeping patterns. i totally blame the molars. i greatly dislike you molars, with a passion. she’s been getting up at night (usually just once) and having terrible, terrible cries. or she’s waking up much earlier than she typically would.

so, this past morning, it was an early wake up call of 5:45am. now this is quite early compared to her usual 8am wake up. we did our usual lay around in bed after she nursed and slowly got ourselves ready for the day.

on the agenda? eating breakfast somewhere yummy. it was a gloomy day but we were going to make it a great day! we packed up and went to egg harbor cafe in downtown downers. we had a nice corner table and ordered up some good stuff to eat.

olive was completely entertained with the crayons and her coloring sheet. she’s such a funny, neat gal {like her mama!}, after she was done using the crayons, she actually put them all back into the jar from where she grabbed them. haha! i wonder who she learned that from?!

after we ate and snapped a few fun photos, we decided to head home and chillax on this rainy day of ours. it was definitely low key and needed. sometimes our days can be such a whirlwind and it’s nice to just do nothing. well, {hehehe} grace and rich do nothing, i’m usually running around doing something! ha!

a little blip

i was excited to meet up with olivia for lunch because it was her birthday week! i was glad we were able to get together and do a little celebrating with just us gals.

of course, i met up with her during the week…it’s the only way, lately, for us to get together. i was waiting for her to get back to me on a time and we didn’t settle on one until late morning, which caused me to run a bit behind. i needed to pack up olive’s things, get her changed and ready, get myself ready, drop her off at my parent’s house and get myself on the road {with all the interruptions i have along the way with miss olive’s shenanigans!}.

i arrived much later than what i wanted to {olivia had a meeting planned at 1:30pm, so we only had a little over an hour to gab} but nevertheless, we were able to get in some good ol’ catching up! we talked about her birthday plans, we talked about our little ones {well, olivia’s darling niece fiona is a month older than olive}, and we talked about how life was treating us.

via tandeminlove.com

[the card was all colorful balloons, a perfect match!]

we really want to get together soon with our boys and just hang out. of course, aaron and rich have a lot in common and totally have a bromance going on {they loooove geeking out over cars and such} and us gals just want to chitchat…it’s what we do best! haha! we just love our girl time!

after eating our delicious salads, i had olivia open up her gift! i loved her little bag and card i gave her. i’m so bad when it comes to parting with the cards and packaging that i buy. i always have such a hard time letting go. i love all the cards, bags, tissue paper, wrapping paper, etc. that i buy that i actually dislike giving it away! i know, crazy right? but i’m sure there are folks out there that can relate! it’s so pretty and most of the time one of a kind, that my heart gets a little sad giving it away, especially my cards. i’m obsessed with buying cards. i love christimas cards, thank you cards, baby cards, birthday cards, wedding cards, any kind of cards and my most favorite kind are letterpress cards.

i figured it out

ever since olivia has moved back home from florida {almost a year ago}…our schedules are so off that we never really get to see each other. i totally miss our hang time. we used to get together for lunches/dinners/whatevs all the time. practically living side by side in chicago, it was soooo easy to meet up. we love our gab sessions. we are two gals who can talk and talk and talk. sometimes we get kicked out of restaurants, well not really but we do shut some places down sometimes. hmmmm, that seems to be the case with a lot of my friends {matt? ande?}. we can sit there and gab and gab; we can then slowly feel the stares of the restaurant workers on our backs…usually a hint to us that it is time to leave and gab somewhere else.

anyhoozle, i was sitting around {or not} and thinking about how i have missed my girl time with this lovely lady. as she was moving back into chicago, my family was moving just outside of it. so, that convenience was eliminated. her job became a monday through friday thing, so our schedules never coordinated. i then realized that her job wasn’t too far from where we live and i was sure she had a decent lunch break time everyday, so i texted her to figure it out. voila! we can get back to our regularly scheduled program. yeeeaahhhh boy!

i picked liv up at her work spot and we decided to go to a place called roti. now please understand that where she works is smack dab in the middle of suburbia land and the restaurants all around are just chain restaurants. what you say? what is wrong with chain restaurants? well, one…i’m not a fan. yes call me a snob. go ahead. i’ll call myself one. i’d rather drive into the city and eat out there then eat out in the ‘burbs. it’s just not my thing. um, that is one reason why i pitched a fit at the idea of moving out to the ‘burbs. don’t get me wrong…there are plenty of independent, fabulous restaurants in the ‘burbs that i will go to. fer shizzle. but that doesn’t hold a candle to the city {duh}. soooooo, {sorry for the tangent}, long story – that is why and that is probably going to be the case, on why we will probably always eat at some typical chain restaurant when we meet up for lunch go forward.

so, here we are: enjoying a good meal at this mediterranean spot. i actually left little miss olive behind because it’s been awhile since olivia and i have had some one on one girl time without the babes. it was pretty awesome to be able to complete my sentences and finish my stories without distractions! although she was greatly missed, olivia is soooo good with olive and of course she adores her!

after an hour of gabbing {which was waaaayyy too short}, i dropped miss olivia back at her office {we also did our typical – sit in the car for another 10 mins /sometimes it’s been an hour/ and gab thingy}. it was fantastic to have met up and catch up. i love this girl. i can’t wait for more lunch dates with her and olive!

andrea’s baby shower

i’m so excited for my friend andrea, she is having her baby girl soon! so, of course a baby shower was in order. her lovely friends, nikki and claire, so graciously hosted such a fete in honor of this momma and her baby girl.

it was a beautiful, beautiful day. the sun was shining {ahhhhhh} and the temperature was puuurrrrfect. the shower was held at a cafe called fennel and iris. it is tucked away in the lakeview neighborhood, right on belmont.

i parked only a few blocks away and traipsed my way towards the restaurant. it was so nice out, i wouldn’t have minded if i had to walk 10 blocks, but having on heels slimmed down my walking distance! i was lucky to have found a spot so close…i guess the luck of the irish was by my side that morning. hence, ALL the chicagoans who were already out and getting their drink on so early in the morning. natch.

i moseyed on in and the party was already in full swing. it is such a cute, quaint little place. it was kitschy and unique. i ran right into a few friends right away, ginger and katheryn had just arrived as well. i was super excited to be there because it’s been awhile since i have seen andrea {busy, busy lives} and some of her friends who i adore. they are all such good people! i mingled and caught up with a few ladies, while i sipped the delicious mimosa nikki had so kindly handed to me.

after a few more minutes of socializing, we were asked to be seated. i was so enwrapped in photo taking, i was pretty much the last person to take my seat! i decided to sit with the ‘moms’. i wanted to get to know them better myself. the first time i met everyone was at jamie and andrea’s wedding and we didn’t get to converse much, so i thought, now is a great time! it was so delightful to chit chat with everyone. jamie’s family are all so sweet. we had a great time getting to know one another and enjoying all the delicious food!

my two favorite nibblers were the deviled eggs {sooooooo good!} and the so called ‘pudding’, honestly, it looked like a frittata to me! nevertheless, those entrees were the most savory. i could have eaten just that but of course, i tried everything {but the fruit, i can eat that anywhere anytime!}.

i am so fortunate to have such a lovely lady in my life. she is sassy, smart, sweet, thoughtful, and kind. i can’t forget to mention stylish and fashionable as well…hmmmm, maybe that is why we get along so well?! hehehe.

anyhoo, claire and nikki did a fabulous job on andrea’s shower. it was perfect – down to the invite, decor, food, favors, and the fun hostesses! thank you so much for letting me be a part of such a special day! andrea and jamie: we can’t wait to meet your precious baby girl!

wrigleyville date

after two strikes, i thought i was going to get called out with my girl time with dana. but we fiiiiinally got together and did our usual routine. i’m going to say that dana was at fault for the both times prior we couldn’t get together for a brunch date 😉 the first time, she was sick {okaaayyy, i forgive her} but it did snow quite a bit and no one wants to go out when it’s snowing…a big pain in the behind. the second time, she just plain forgot. yup. she forgot about us. i texted her the night before and asked about our plans and she was like, ‘whhaaaaaa?’. yeah. she had last minute changed her work schedule and didn’t tell me!

anyhoozle, it worked out great because olive had a wellness check up {not too far from where dana lives} and it’s always easy peasy to jet on over to southport from where we were.

via tandeminlove.com

[at the pediatrician…she was excited to be signing her own paperwork. that is until the nurse came in with needles…eeeekkkkk!]

after olive’s appointment, we drove on over to wrigelyville {which is less than 5 minutes} to meet dana for lunch. of course, we met up at southport grocery! it was a full house but we were seated right away {sweet}. we ordered our usual dishes and dana had a lot to share with me! so much new news and possible changes! oy, i was having a blast catching up with dana, as always. we only had a few hours together because she had to skadaddle to a purim party later that evening that she was hosting for jnf.

dana was super excited that her and olive were having these amaze bonding moments. their relationship was rough from the start. from the moment olive came into this world, she had been skeptical of dana. she wouldn’t let her hold her. olive would barely let her look at her! it was a work in progress and they made leaps and bounds this past date!! yay!

they were like buddies. best buddies. holding hands, giving hugs & kisses, and she let dana hold her with ease. wowza…my baby is growing up 😉 olive was so amused by dana. she liked copying her and playing fun peek a boo games together. it was pretty awesome to see.

hb dick!

yes, it was mr. heintz sr.’s birthday! when i tell people that my husband’s parent’s names are dick and jane, it’s a 99% chance that they totally get a kick out of it. yes, quite the classic duo.

via tandeminlove.com

anyhoo, it was definitely a lazy day for us. we didn’t have to be at dinner until later in the afternoon, so we just hung out all morning and afternoon, just chillin’. it was grrrreat. we did stuff around the house {cleaning, relaxing, eating, etc.} and loved every minute of our no frills or fuss day.

we got ourselves ready and headed out to crystal lake. there was no traffic, so it took us just a little over an hour. it was freeeezing out! oh, so cold. it’s so funny to me that when it’s so cold outside {like 5 degrees out with a negative windchill} for awhile and then we get hit with a day that is 30 degrees, it’s like a freakin’ heatwave here in chiberia!

[dinner party]

once we got there, pretty much everyone showed up at the restaurant at the same time. score…we were all on time! olive was most excited to see grace. it was too sweet. she just lights up when she sees her big sister and i love every moment of it.

we all sat down and perused the menu to decide on what we wanted to eat/order so we could get the ball rolling on this dining excursion. i ordered the tortellini…i’m a sucker for any cream sauce {so healthy 😉 }, pancetta, peas, etc. after we ordered, i pretty much entertained olive or she was entertaining herself. she’s so funny now. she definitely wants to be close to me but yet she also wants her independence. she’s a mixed bag of emotions, actions, and ‘words’. of course, it might have been dick’s birthday but it’s always the olive show, natch. {she’s the cutie baby, duh!}

after dick opened up his gifts, desserts were served. the tiramisu was yummy but i could have done without the chocolate chips inside each bite. that kind of threw me off but overall, it was tasty. it was too much chocolate. yes, i did say that. i’m not a huge chocolate fan. i like it as an accent but not as a whole. annnddd, it has to be mixed with something and not alone. yes, yes. those are my chocolate rules. 😉

love day part 1

yeah, valentine’s day was probably a three part event. well, kinda. it was quite the beeesy weekend for us. we had people over or did something three days in a row, so yes…it was beeesy. it’s so normal for me to not sit still and boy, i wasn’t sitting still at all this entire weekend.

friday, i spent the morning with my dear olive, then i dropped her off at my parent’s and skedaddled on my way to pick up miss grace {which is such a trip!}. that evening, we had terry and the boys over for wings and drinks {root beer for the kiddos and beer beer for the big boys}. the kids had a crazy time playing together…it was non-stop until they left! phew!

on saturday morning {happy valentine’s day!}, we woke up bright and early, thanks to miss olive, and got ourselves ready for our vday brunch in the city! hc had made all the plans…he made reservations for an early morning brunch at the carriage house, in our old stomping ground. oh, don’t get me started on the city! *sniff* how i miss thee on a daily basis.

anyhoo, we arrived at the restaurant and there was just a wee bit of a wait for our table. it was bustling. i do recall this place being built…hmmm, was it a year or year and half ago? we never ate there even though we lived down the street from it! but now it was our time.

i hope everyone had a fantastic love day with their loved one. we sure did! as i stated it the beginning of this post…i still have more love day goodness to come. stay tuned my lovies!

the usual

as always, i get super excited to meet up with my darling dana. we both had prior commitments {conference call, possible venue searching, and a doctor’s appointment} but we don’t let that stop us from getting together! the good news is that everything else fell through and it was just going to be a me, dana, and olive day! i love how that happens. i told dana that i love how we are so busy but we will always squeeze in time for each other and the cards will all fall into place. natch.

so we met up at our usual place and ordered our usual breakfast’s, and did our usual thing. chit chat chit chat chit chat. we all sat together on the same booth, with olive in-between us. it was perfect. she was trapped, i could pay attention to them both, it was easy to feed her, keep her comfortable, and enjoy myself {because she’s content}.

we hung for a bit at the restaurant. it was nice to just take our time, relax, and be on our own schedule. we did our typical walk over to anthropologie after brunch, we perused the racks, checked out the sale, and then moseyed along to our cars to head to our next destination. we decided we would spend the rest of our date at target. woooo!

after i changed her diaper and fed her, she was a running fool! she did.not.want.to.be.in.the.cart. she just ran everywhere. she’s a fast little devil. i was trying to shop but i was basically just chasing after her! she was too cute. she would slightly touch everything but not mess anything up. she would run up and down aisles and she ooh’d and ahh’d over everything at her eye level. i was amused just watching her.

after an hour or so in target, olive was spent. she had the tiniest, tiniest morning nap and she was not happy by the end of our shopping trip. she was dunzo. it was time to strap her into the cart seat and have her go down for another nap. and so it was. i have to add in that it was not very easy to get there. {my next ten minutes goes like this} she was screaming, wouldn’t let dana watch her so i could use the restroom, i kept losing track of my stuff due to her fussiness distracting me {where is my phone? where is my wallet? stuff you shouldn’t lose track of!}, dana and i then spilt my venti coffee all over our cart and into my shopping bag {ugh!}, and when we finally got to my car, her car seat seat belt was all twisted {and i couldn’t get it untangled!} and my baby girl was screaming in her seat! oy…what a debacle. it was not the kind of end to our date that i wanted! i shooed dana away with a big hug and proceeded to tackle the seat belt with success. score: seat belt 0 – moi 1.

we finally drove off {phew!} and little olive was out within five minutes. she was a tired little peanut. all in all, it was quite a wonderful morning/afternoon with our lovely miss dana. muwah!
