snow day

i was looking forward to my day off.

well, actually, i was not looking forward to waking up early {yuck!  i just despise waking up early} but definitely looking forward to what was to come after my court appointment {don’t ask, so lame}.

then came news of the snow.  everyone was abuzz {yesterday} about the snow that was coming.  i was skeptical, as usual {i mean, c’mon…it’s chicago aaandddd it snows every year aaanddd the weatherman always claims “it’s going to be the worst snowfall of the year!” every time!}.  so, as predicted, the snow was coming down early this morning.  i geared up and went out to abolish this silly court thing.  trudging through the snow towards the daley center…it was pretty heavy.  i had my trusty sorels on, my earphones in {with some good walking jams on}, and my umbrella {i laugh at those peeps who walk by with the worst looking dandruff on their heads}.  i got there early and was quickly called up in front of the judge.  my ticket was dismissed {duh!} and i was on my merry way back home.

as i was walking, the snow wouldn’t stop.  i was looking forward to having lunch with my dad and then, later, dinner with the sis + bro-in-law and the two cutest nephews alive.  but i digressed with the idea of driving out to the ‘burbs.  it made me sad.  i love my days off and i love making the most of my time and i love seeing my family.  damn you snow!

so, i went home.  i was cooped up in my place {with no hubby charming // can you see my sad face?} and felt a little stir crazy.  it’s so not me to sit around in my apartment, especially by myself!  so i stared out the window, i did a little cleaning, i did a little web surfing, and i did a little crafting.  time started to fly by {phew!}.  finally, i did a little cooking.  cooking for one seems more pragmatic and conventional than cooking for two or more, right?  i’ll just cook whatever is available or i tend to eat breakfast for dinner!  it’s not that important on what i cook, as long as i am fed.

love.her.style.

i die over every look she puts together.  so chic.  so stylish.  so unique.  she wears it well.

her look is never conventional or vapid.  always stunning and alluring.

don’t hate her because she’s skinny, has the shiniest hair, perfect porcelain skin, and the most delicate facial features.  hate her because she effortlessly puts together a flawless outfit time and time again.  uptown + downtown chic never looked so good.  every outfit is decadent.  divine.  devastatingly detailed.

style is very visceral.  just go with it.  create, combine, mix, and represent who you are {ask yourself: how do you want to shine today?} whether it’s rocker, preppy, sexy, or feminine.   i believe everyone has a signature look that can be played up and altered to really embody your genre.

my staples?  color. comfort. accessories. textures. patterns. feminine. polished make-up + hair [curly or straight].

fashion week in the city of lights.  love.

best of both worlds

as you probably have read in my previous post, about my mom + her cooking and her mom duties of making sure her children are fed,  we had frozen some food she had us bring home the other week {a copious amount!}.  we were waiting for our schedules to align [a time where we are both home + an open dinner slot] and of course, not having this land on a friday [no meat lent friday!].

so that time was now.  i was very excited to break out the bánh bao {to die for!}.  it’s a favorite of mine, amongst a huge variety of other things my mom makes {honestly, everything is my ‘favorite’}.  hubby charming then created his own recipe for fried rice.  adding his own pizazz as he stir fried the white rice to perfection!  voila, a delicious meal created by my love, hubby charming, and my loving mother dearest!  it can’t get any better than that {right?}!!  it was the best of both worlds, combining their skills, and a damn good meal as a final result…yum, yum, yum.

here’s a recipe for some yummy fried rice.  not exactly the one hc used {he improvised} but very close!  enjoy!

DIRECTIONS

*In a saucepan, combine rice and water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. {hc says to use old rice, or let the rice sit for a day for best results!}
*In a small saucepan, boil carrots in water about 3 to 5 minutes. Drop peas into boiling water, and drain.
*Heat wok over high heat. Pour in oil, then stir in carrots and peas; cook about 30 seconds. Crack in eggs, stirring quickly to scramble eggs with vegetables. Stir in cooked rice. Shake in soy sauce, and toss rice to coat. Drizzle with sesame oil, and toss again.

good in this world

as i walking home late tonight, i was passing a girl in the alley.  the ground was very, very icy & slick.  she slipped just a bit in front of me and then i heard her scream behind me.  i turned around and saw that she had fallen on the ground.  she groaned in pain.  i ran over to help her but she rebuffed my assistance.  i could tell that she was hurt and could not get up.  she said she felt that she had twisted her knee.

hubby charming always meets me when i come home at night.  i saw him at the end of the alley, right before the girl fell.  he saw something was going on and was walking our way.  i insisted on helping her.  i said, “don’t worry, you need help!  my husband will help us, too.” she kept saying no but i was steadfast on aiding her.  hubby charming walked up to us as i was pulling her up onto her feet.  the poor girl was so upset; we both held onto her as we walked down to the end of the alley to her apartment.

unfortunately, we were all slipping down the alley but better all of us than her alone and hurt!  we got her safely to a clear sidewalk in the back of her home.  i asked if she had roommates to help her, she said yes.  we wanted to walk her to her door but she reassured us she was fine.  she sobbed, “there are good people in this world.  thank you, thank you so much!”.  she was so deeply moved that strangers would help her the way we did [honestly, i felt like we didn’t do much of anything!  although, city peeps tend to not be the nicest.]  she gave us both big hugs and we walked our separate ways.

we never exchanged names.  i’m not sure if we will ever see each other again, our paths might cross but will we even recognize each other?  we were so bundled up, we could hardly see each other’s face in this cold, cold weather.  the one thing i did walk away with is that i was so happy to have helped her.  i was so happy that she was touched by strangers who were just doing the right thing.

i just can’t imagine a world where kindness or selfless acts don’t exist;  to uphold and live the extensions of God’s teachings as best we can in our daily lives.  challenge ourselves everyday to do something good, do something better.  that something so small and simple as helping a girl, who fell, to her home was so incredibly appreciated by her; she was so overwhelmed that strangers would take the time to help someone they didn’t know {i do believe that is just the city dweller’s mentality: mind your own business & be cautious of everyone}.

the world can be a dark place to some and some might call me naive but i believe there is always good, and innately good people and actions.  don’t get me wrong, i know evil and bad tendencies do exist.  i choose to believe in hope & the good in folks.

beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.  John 4:7

sip + spend

the new anthropologie in lincoln park just opened up!

i was very excited to attend the grand opening ce soir [i mean, who doesn’t just love that store?!].   drinks, appetizers, music, and shopping…a perfect combination!  we sipped cocktails {signature drink – moscow mule: vodka, ginger beer, + lime juice!}, ooh’d and ahh’d over the merchandise, did a lot of people watching, and some folks in our group spent some moolah {not me!  *wink* to hubby charming}.

my favorites?  rifle paper goods, the best candle ever: volcano, every necklace, every set of earrings, ag denim, and pretty much every dress they sell 🙂
